New Nauttiqsuqtiit Conservation Centre Coming to Clyde River

Through years of advocacy and negotiation, the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) worked on behalf of Inuit in the region to secure lasting protections and meaningful benefits through the Tallurutiup Imanga Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement (IIBA)—officially signed on August 1, 2019. This agreement formally established the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area, recognizing Inuit leadership in protecting our waters and way of life.

As part of the IIBA, QIA secured investments to build Nauttiqsuqtiit Conservation Centres in five High Arctic communities: Clyde River, Arctic Bay, Grise Fiord, Pond Inlet, and Resolute Bay.

In Clyde River, the new Nauttiqsuqtiit Conservation Centre will support local Inuit stewardship and provide space for a range of important community activities. The facility will include offices, research space, meeting rooms, a country food preparation area, as well as a small vehicle maintenance and woodworking shop. It will also feature a Government of Nunavut Parks Visitors’ Centre, along with office and garage space to support GN Parks operations in the region.

The building will also offer rental or lease space for organizations looking to operate or collaborate in the community.

Construction is planned to be completed by Fall 2026, when the facility will open its doors to serve the Clyde River community.
